Mysterio went and tried JB Zi Char at this ulu and unconventional place so you don't have to.
Hidden in the streets of Taman Sentosa, you will find a bustling street that is filled with crowds of people coming in to settle down. A rare sight to see in JB especially if it's swarmed with locals.
Besides Zi char stall, there is also another stall selling Thai meat skewers as well as Lok Lok, however, the objective is to only cover the Zi Char here.
Mysterio order 4 dishes, namely:
-> Cereal Fried Sotong
-> La La Soup
-> Clay pot Tofu
-> Sambal Kang Kong
Cereal Sotong :
As seen in the photo above, the cereal and the fried sotong are 2 separate entity, which seems to be mixed together at the end. This meant that the cereal was premade before hand and thrown in upon ordering of the dish. Even though the fried sotong is crispy when served, it wasnt as good as expected when Mysterio tasted it. The cereal itself seems to be mixed with sugar and doesn't taste like it was being stir fried with butter before, hence its very dry. This separation caused the dish to be unable to bring out the full taste of the dish, very different from Mysterio's expectations.
La La Soup:
La La Soup is served in a mini wok, with solid fuel burning below, keeping the soup nice and warm. Surprisingly, the lala soup has a very light and refreshing taste to it. Mysterio is able to taste the sweetness of the LaLa in the soup. The LaLa is also relatively fresh, with only 1 shell fully closed when we finished the soup. However, at the bottom of the soup, we were able to find a few sand sediments in soup, dropping the standard of the soup.
Claypot Tofu:
This dish is also served in a mini wok instead of a claypot despite the dish name. Mysterio is slightly disappointed at this but at least it kept the food warm. This dish have quite a lot of ingredients in it, ranging from tofu, carrots, brocoli, napa cabbage, green, mushrooms and red bell pepper. Moving onto taste, this dish in general taste good, but still lacks the wok hei from a good "claypot" tofu dish.
Sambal Kang Kong:
Sambal Kang Kong is always the dish that Mysterio goes for, this is because it always hits the spot when consuming this. For this dish, the spiciness is just right, maybe for some, it will be considering slightly spicy. When Mysterio first tasted this, the wok hey for this is strong and fragrant.
Verdict:
Mysterio rate it 3.5/5 stars
Taste: Cereal Fried Sotong is kind of medicore, But the La La soup is exceptional, with the soup being surprising sweet and La La is fresh. Sambal kang kong which has Wok Hei and right amount of spiciness. Lastly, the claypot tofu is good in general except for the serving plate which was served in a heated mini wok that is a bit unique.
Price: Total cost of the 4 dishes amounts to 72rm, which is considered reasonable.
